The Uvhungu Vungu Irrigation Project is one of the seven Irrigation Projects in Kavango region. The project is located 10 km East of Rundu town. It covers a total fenced off area of 825 ha.

2.1       Area under Irrigation/ under production

• Uvhungu Vungu commercial is having a total area under centre pivot irrigation of

333 ha and 28 ha under dragline irrigation.

• The project has also 0.8 Ha under green house and 1.2 Ha under net shed. The roofs were destroyed by wind and not in production.

Small Scale Irrigation Farmers production area is 60 ha and is all under dragline irrigation system. There are 10 SSIF who were mainstreamed to the project since 2010 on contract agreement for 5 years and was renewed in 2016 for another five years. The 60-ha land is divided among those 10 SSIF and each is operating on 6 hectares.

The current labour force is 24 of which 11 are female.

During 2022 summer, Uvhungu planted 122 ha of maize on the commercial part and 60 hectares for the SSF. We are still busy harvesting and the SSF also must still harvest.

For the winter season of 2023, we procured what was needed and planted 25 ha wheat. We have 20 ha under pivot irrigation and 5 ha on dragline irrigation.

We have planted the following vegetables – they are very young and will be ready for marketing during end of August and September.

Sweet potato

Cabbage

Spinach.

We will start producing other vegetables after the winter which will include Green Pepper, Butternuts, Carrots and Beetroot.
